Guardians of the Galaxy Review

Hello my fellow comic book lovers and welcome to another one of your Friendly Neighborhood Dork Knight’s movie reviews! This time, your favorite fat-bearded nerd had the opportunity to attend an early screening of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy thanks to the fine folks at Cosmic Comics in Las Vegas and man, it did not disappoint. If that trailer doesn’t get you pumped up, then this ain’t the movie for you, because what you see, is what you get.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is a funny, action-packed, out-of-this-world sci-fi adventure that takes place “not so long ago, in a galaxy quite nearby” (to quote the talented Matt Ferguson from Cakes and Comics). This movie felt like the beginning of this generation’s Star Wars, but, dare I say, cooler and with a lot more humor and plenty of heart.

In fact, the movie’s opening sequence, which takes place in 1988, is quite the tearjerker; however, it’s immediately followed up with some lighthearted humor thanks to some great music courtesy of a Sony Walkman and the fancy footwork of one Mr. Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt). Shortly after Quill literally dances his way to a mysterious orb he’s been hired to steal, he finds himself the subject of a manhunt with a hefty bounty on his head thanks to an altercation with Korath (Djimon Hounsou) that alerts the villainous Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) of the orb’s theft. Ronan is a Kree who has been tasked by Thanos (the purple-skinned badie from the first post-credits scene in Marvel’s Avengers) with acquiring the orb.

After Ronan finds out that Quill has the orb, he sends Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a “daughter of Thanos” and sexy, green-skinned bad-ass, to finish the job Korath could not. Once Gamora runs into Quill she finds herself at odds with not only Quill, but also with Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel) who are after Quill for his bounty. That little escapade, which was a pure pleasure to watch, winds them all up in jail where they run into Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista).

From there, our Guardians begin to form into the group of heroes they’re destined to become, but not without some bumps in the road along the way (including a very funny bar fight between a drunken Rocket and Drax). There are also some great moments from Yondu Udonta (Michael Rooker) that manage to steal a couple of scenes, not to mention the awesome sight of Thanos on his floating throne in space!

Overall, I give Guardians of the Galaxy 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has a running time of two hours and was written and directed by James Gunn (who also wrote and directed Super). Be sure to see it when it opens Friday, August 1st in theaters nationwide, but don’t feel the need to wait around for a final post-credits scene because there isn’t one (you’re welcome). UPDATE 7/25/2014 – Turns out I jumped the gun on that after credits scene. Apparently, they don’t show the after credits scene at press screenings, but I have been assured that there will be one when it releases to the general public.
