During the early 1960s, more and more teens began buying silver age comics for sale. Comic book writers were interested in coming up with a superhero with whom teenagers could relate so head writer Stan Lee wanted Spider-Man to be an average teenage boy. This proved to be a great idea because Spider-Man had the same problems as the teenagers reading about him. These problems included peer pressure, school, work, and girls. Readers could see themselves in Peter Parker (Spider-Man’s real identity). Up to this point, teens who appeared in comic books were usually consigned to the role of the sidekick. These sidekicks had the benefit of being mentored by their superheroes. Spider-Man had none of this and had to find out for himself how to use and control his powers.
Peter Parker was born an average, normal boy. After he was bitten by a radioactive spider while on a school field trip, he began to change. He suddenly had many of the same abilities as a spider including being able to climb up walls and shoot webs from his wrists. He was also gifted with incredible strength, speed, and agility. He had the ability to sense danger, what has become known as his “spidey-sense.” He even used his sewing skills to create his own costume in order to hide his true identity. Peter Parker was portrayed as being a smart boy who was particularly good at science including chemistry and physics. He used his smarts to build many devices that he used to aid him in his fight against super villains. These devices include mechanical web-shooters, spider tracers, and light beacons.
With these great superpowers, it’s not hard to see why Spider-Man is still popular today. In fact, Spider-Man has maintained his popularity over the last 50 years and is still going strong with the release of the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man movie next week.
