Return of Wolverine #1 review
The Return of Wolverine! Yes! Wolvie is back! Or is he? Did he ever actually die? What the hell is going on? I admit the whole “Death of Wolverine” thing has been a bit foggy considering there’s been some type of Wolverine since his “death” so we’ve never really experienced a Marvel without the Canuck. I’ll be the first to admit I’ve loved Logan. Brian Michael Bendis and Andrea Sorrentino’s 2015 Old Man Logan was one of the best Wolverine stories I’ve ever read, and Logan’s place in the newest X-Men teams has been a welcomed addition.
The Return of Wolverine has been a long time coming, largely formulated and masterminded by Charles Soule. Everything he’s crafted has finally come to a head in Return of Wolverine #1. From black cut to “Wolverine” , bloody and in excruciating pain with his red hot claws extended. His memory is shot, extinct monsters attack him, scientists tell him he’s “Wolverine” and fill his head with what they declare as truth. He doesn’t know what’s right and what’s wrong, he’s just running on pure instincts.
If Wolverine never “actually” died and we’ve had some form of Logan since his supposed “death”, why should you care about the Return of Wolverine #1? Because it’s bad ass! It’s Wolverine in his purest form, very Weapon-X. Charles Soule has really outdone himself with this story. He impressed me with his She-Hulk run and kind of faded as every story since then obviously can’t be as great as that one but, his Wolverine stories were beginning to lack a certain something, and yes, they were boring, I’ll say it. Not the Return of Wolverine though, holy smokes is this book good.
Steve McNiven joins Soule covering the raw art. I’ve always liked McNiven’s art, especially his past work in Civil War, starting Secret Empire, Guardians of the Galaxy with Brian Michael Bendis, and of course his work starting this whole storyline with Death of Wolverine. Here McNiven shows Wolverine as the savage he is, a wounded animal backed into a corner. The style is very Arthur Adams and I love it.
This isn’t hype, Return of Wolverine #1 is the beginning of something amazing and you better start reading up on it now. Hell, I may even try to get back into some of the Death of Wolverine arcs I passed up.
