Fatima #1 Review
“The Blood Spinners”
Written and drawn by Las Vegas local Gilbert Hernandez, Fatima #1 is a new book aching to be an underground hit. It has a bad ass heroine, drugs, guns, and the all important zombies.
Fatima is an operative for an organization in charge of controlling a contagion caused by a street drug called Spin. Spin is a unique drug that when taken, turns people into zombies. The high must be amazing because people continue to take it knowing it’s ill effects it will have on them. Fatima is a trained killer, but she wasn’t always that way, remembering her first mission with operations, a real “cherry buster” and drug bust gone bad.
Fatima #1 is one of those books that will be inevitably skimmed over by most readers. Don’t be one of those perusers, at closer glance Fatima is a creative book with a great story. Kind of a new take on the over saturated zombie genre, Fatima brings this retro/futuristic sci-fi look to the table with a sharp narrative and dialogue. The art will not get enough credit from me, it’s something that needs to be explained in greater detail by a pompous art dealer or comic book aficionado. There’s an excerpt at the back of the book written by one of these people, and I couldn’t tell if he was making things up to sound smart, or really did see distinctions in body language.
