X-Men: Days of Future Past
There is only one word: EPIC.
So, I thought I was in love with the new Cap trailer, I was wrong. This X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer has really captured my heart. I’m thoroughly convinced that it is impossible not to be excited for this movie.
I’m so impressed with the tone that they took with the X-Men trailer. The music sets it up perfectly, and I personally love the pretty much solo voice-over from Patrick Stewart – that really brings some continuity through the trailer. It also really complements the provocative imagery going on here. The pacing of the trailer was something else that was spot-on. Did I mention how excited I am for this movie?
The big elephant in the chat-rooms that I’m really seeing is a lot of Mystique controversy. There’s been quite the extensive call to oust Jennifer Lawrence in favor of Rebecca Romijn reprising the role. The best point in favor of this thought that I’ve come across will cite some comic references specific to her character. The first being that we’re not exactly sure about Mystique’s age, especially considering that her shape-shifting powers have allowed her to appear any age, gender and appearance she fancies for many, many years. And while Jennifer Lawrence definitely does play Mystique well, casting Rebecca Romijn in Day of Future Past, as well as First Class would have given her that ageless quality that so many X-Men fans seem to be looking for.
However, the Jennifer Lawrence fangirl in me must admit that I do feel as though she doesn’t get the credit she deserves. Many of the criticisms that she has received haven’t been about her acting ability. In fact, I feel as if she portrays Mystique very well. Really, the brunt of the focus lies in some poor story development taking place in X-Men: First Class; particularly the deviation from her origin story, which played out on-screen as Mystique’s character playing sides to get some lovin’ wherever she could, and ultimately confusing audiences about her motivations for becoming the villain we’ve come to know and love.
Whichever way you’re feeling about Mystique: her casting, portrayal in the films, where X-Men: Days of Future Past is going to take her character – I look forward to reading your opinions in the comments.
X-Men fans, we all have something to celebrate – some sexy special effects, some Ellen Page, some Hugh Jackman, and a whole lot of Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen. I’m going to start stocking up on popcorn, because I’m thinking this X-Men film is gonna kick ass!
