The Dork Knight’s The Lone Ranger Movie Review

A few month’s ago I was fortunate enough to attend a special AMC Theaters The Lone Ranger Trailer Debut and Fan Event at the AMC Town Square 18 thanks to the guys at Cosmic Comics in Las Vegas. There I was able to get a look at twenty minutes of footage that really got me stoked to see the film and after having seen it this past July 4th, I can honestly say I was not disappointed.

Check out this featurette and I’ll share my thoughts on the movie below.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and in my opinion it’s one of the best offerings of the summer so far (much better than Iron Man 3 and The Hangover Part III). While I’m predisposed to liking anything Star Trek, being 100% objective, Star Trek Into Darkness is still my favorite movie of the summer, with World War Z and now The Lone Ranger being tied for a close second. Sadly however, I seem to be in the minority with this opinion (much like I was with my thoughts on Man of Steel). In the week it has taken me to get this review up there’s been an outpouring of hatred spewed at this movie and it currently sits at an abysmal 25% on Rotten Tomatoes. It barely beat out the Sandra Bullock, Melissa McCarthy comedy, The Heat, at the box office its opening weekend with just $29.2 million. When the movie, including marketing, cost over $225 million to make that truly is sad news for Disney. Friends of mine are comparing it to John Carter (another movie I loved a lot that flopped) in how Disney put a ton of money into pushing the movie, but the public, for whatever reason, just wasn’t buying it.

All that said, The Lone Ranger is exactly what a summer movie should be. A fun and exciting, action-packed ride from start to finish that’s as brutal as it is comical. Seriously, don’t take your little ones to see this. The movie’s lead villain, Butch Cavendish (played by the always great William Fichtner), eats hearts and while it isn’t shown directly, you do see him eat one in a reflection. Johnny Depp provides several funny lines even amidst brutal moments like when The Lone Ranger shoots a warning shot that inadvertently kills two men by shooting a rope holding a huge plank that ends up squashing the two mens’ skulls in. The fight sequences were fun and even at it’s most unbelievable moments it all seemed like it could have really happened; there wasn’t anything too over the top which always makes suspending disbelief easier.

I highly recommend this flick for age appropriate audiences and I’m going to see it again with my fourteen-year-old son, Number One, today.
