20XX #1 Review
20XX is a hot little indie book from Image Comics written by Jonathan Luna (Alex + Ada) and newcomer Lauren Keely. There was already a buzz around Cosmic Comics before I even picked it up for review. Luna’s Alex + Ada had left quite the impression around the shop and everyone seemed very pleased with the newest Keely team-up.
20XX is a futuristic sci-fi drama that observes the cultural divide of norms and syms. The latter being those who survived a horrible and deadly disease only to be “cursed” with telekinetic abilities. These abilities known as “STS” let them control certain materials, thus making use of them illegal. You’d think having telekinetic powers would be a blessing but syms find themselves as being outcasts in a society that shuns and fears them. Civil unrest obviously follows.
A post-apocalyptic cyber-punk story of sorts, 20XX is a smart read that has a Hernandez brother’s Love & Rockets vibe. Maybe it’s the art, maybe it’s the dialogue, or maybe it’s the black and white pages. Regardless, the comparison is meant to be a compliment as 20XX will sit quietly on the shelves and garner a cult following much like L&R does also.
