Ame-Comi Girls #1 Featuring Wonder Woman Review
The series based on the Ame-Comi statues has arrived thanks to DC Comics, and the first issue features none other than the amazonian princess, Wonder Woman. The first issue was written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, and is a new origin story for Wonder Woman. The art is shared by Amanda Conner and Tony Akins.
Times are changing, and the peaceful island of Themyscira is becoming a target for larger militia ridden countries. In order to keep the peace of her country, Diana must quickly mature from the warrior she is, to a political diplomat over night. These transitions are never easy, but a form fitting piece of cloth always helps.
I had no clue Ame-Comi were statues, after seeing the title, I thought it was some Manga type book, and then was further confused when I saw it wasn’t that at all. The story fits with the recent “New 52” zero issues from DC Comics, so that’s par for the course. It is nice to see a little refresher, but there was no shock factor or huge surprises. Ame-Comi Girls #1 Featuring Wonder Woman is just a generally good read, but nothing too special. My largest complaint comes from the change in artist in the last 10 pages of the book. Amanda Conner’s art is great while Tony Akins’ is almost awful. I feel so bad saying it’s awful, but it really isn’t good and you can completely tell it’s a different artist. It’s like first string was annihilating the competition so they put in third string to just maintain the lead. Besides my disappointment with the last 10 pages of the book, Ame-Comi Girls #1 Featuring Wonder Woman is a decent read and gives you sufficient time to ogle over plenty of amazonian goddesses.
