Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues Review
Karate Kid must live on! A trilogy, Hilary Swank, an animated series, a Jackie Chan reboot, and an over saturated ReAction figure line isn’t enough. We need more. Luckily YouTube Premium has brought Cobra Kai to a streaming device near you. Sadly, I haven’t seen an episode. YouTube Premium is like Jay and Silent Bob trying to take the bus. “Didn’t we used to take the bus for free?” Didn’t I get to watch cat videos for free? Yes I did, I do, and I will continue to do so without paying for them. So the Cobra Kai series sits behind a paywall to me but, I’ve heard good things.
Lets move forward to the cheaper option of keeping up with the Karate Kid universe. I’m talking about IDW Publishing’s contribution, Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues. This book opens up with Johnny’s Story. Daniel and Mr. Miyagi are so 1980, let’s root for the bad guy or at least see his side of the story. That’s so much more 2019.
Johnny’s Story fills in a few plot holes from the original 1984 Karate Kid. Denton Titpon writes an expanding story shedding light on why Johnny happens to be such a dick. Daddy issues, arrogance, jealousy, and alcohol all seem to be contributing factors. 1980’s suburban problems amirite?
Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues strength is its appeal to those fans of the newest Cobra Kai series and the original film in which it weaves and intertwines its story. This can also been seen as the books weakness as those unaware of the original film will have no idea who or what any of this is. You definitely don’t want to start here, maybe start with some crane kicking Macchio and adorable Shue before you Strike First! and Strike Hard!
