Falcon & Winter Soldier #1 Review
As the buzz about the Falcon and Winter Soldier TV series continue to fly around the interwebs since comic con, Marvel quietly released a 5 part mini series. So quietly in fact that Cosmic Comics! got about 40 issues they didn’t even order. So what do I get to do? Review it, that’s what.
Falcon & Winter soldier are the oil and water dynamic. Ebony and Ivory. Good cop, bad cop. Is it original? No. Does it work? In this case, yes.
Sam and Bucky’s worlds collide by the coincidence of mass murder, a short amount of detective work and literally one phone call. It’s quick and it gets right to the point. Here’s Bucky, he’s cool, shoots things, has a cool cat. Here’s Sam, not so cool, talks to birds, BAM! murder and a villain. It’s great!
Derek Landy writes Falcon & Winter Soldier and is joined by pencils from Federico Vicentini. The quick moving book is accented by appropriate art from Vicentini. It’s definitely brutal enough for Bucky, introducing a new classy foe who goes by the name of The Natural. Think Robert Redford in The Natural but instead of swinging bats he swings fist. I’ve never seen The Natural but I’ve seen the cover art and a bat was definitely involved.
Falcon & Winter Soldier is great prep for the upcoming TV series. See these two in action in a book that’s actually very good. Getting a surprise book like this isn’t exactly like Christmas, it’s more like candy at Easter but that’s still not half bad.
