Mercury Heat #1 review
Ah yes, good ol’ Avatar Press is bringing you something that isn’t Uber or Crossed for a change. Mercury Heat #1 doesn’t fall far from their typical fair though, there’s still plenty of blood and destruction to go around.
Mercury Heat #1 is coming from Kieron Gillen who most of you may know has written some fantastic books like The Wicked and the Divine, Star Wars: Darth Vader, and yes, Uber. I’ll admit though, Mercury Heat falls short of those books.
Mercury Heat though has a very interesting story, feeding off of the science of Mercury. Its become an industrial planet, one with extended years and prolonged days. The side facing the sun melts your skin, and the dark side instantly freezes it, making it necessary for everything to move along with its rotation. See? Very cool right?
Luiza, Mercury Heat‘s main protagonist is a bounty hunter of sorts who desperately wants to be “police”. That’s the less interesting part of the book, but! But, she’s investigating deaths on Mercury that couldn’t be investigated earlier because of the planet’s dangerous rotation. And boom, like a cold case Mercury Heat is back to being interesting again.
Mercury Heat #1 is a strange beast, I want to like it, then Luiza’s stupid costume turns me away, I read on and its action draws me back in, but then it loses steam. Fans of Avatar Press will recognize the book as part of their style and I definitely suggest it for enthusiasts of the publisher. People who tend to enjoy Syfy original series will possibly also take a genuine liking to the book.
