New Mutants # 1 (2019) Review
How dare Marvel in all their X-Men loving glory continue the X-Men saga by dropping both New Mutants and X-Force in the same week. The audacity! How am I supposed to review all the newest mutant goodness let alone keep up with it? With all this good stuff, how am I supposed to review anything new from DC either? Sitting here trying to decide if I’m going to review the newest Legion of Superheroes, New Mutants, or X-Force.
Out of those three I felt most compelled to review New Mutants #1 (2019) as it was the one that stood out the most. It can’t be nostalgia, as Legion of Superheroes were some of my first comic books I ever read. Spoiler, there’s a lot of superheroes in the Legion and they all look and act like they’re freshly out of high school working at Abercrombie without supervision. X-Force on the other hand is the stark opposite of LOSH, they’re much older and much more serious. If you want some serious action X-Force is the book for you.
This brings us all back around to New Mutants #1 (2019). New enough to be interesting but familiar enough to be comforting, New Mutants is the next best book behind Marauders. It’s not surprising that Jonathan Hickman has something to do with it, writing alongside Ed Brisson who’s been one of my favorites writing the Age of X-Man: Nextgen mini-series and the recently concluded Dead Man Logan. They’re joined by Rod Reis who’s art has a real fresh Sienkiewicz vibe to it, bringing even more familiarity to the book.
All of these things combined brings together a New Mutants that’s not as free spirited as Marauders but a great read in between when X-Men and X-Force get a bit too serious. These are the youths I’d be wanting to team up and hang out with if I was 15 years younger. Honestly I’d side with whatever team Magik is on because she’s one bad piece of ace anyway. The newer New Mutants are a fun bunch of angsty teens trying to make a difference in not just Krakoa but in the galaxy. And thanks to the Starjammers, they’re going to be spending a bit more time in space whether they like it or not.
