Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #1 Review
Only a week in, the 12 issue “maxi-series” Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #1 is already underappreciated and under the radar. To the untrained eye it appears to be just another book with Superman in it. However those savvy enough to notice writing by Matt Fraction and art from Steve Lieber know it’s so much more than that.
Jimmy Olsen is. Little Darkseid humor for you there. Olsen is Superman’s Pal, his problem, and now long distance BFF. Jimmy has his own “Olsen Mitigation Exclusion” insurance premium with the Daily Planet for his make-a-wish charity stunts, dangerous scoops, and overall crazy exploits. Exploits mind you including being chased by T-Rex, escaping a gorilla wedding, and becoming genetically altered into a giant turtle falling from space like a meteor. It’s Jimmy being Jimmy. He just can’t be Jimmy in Metropolis anymore.
Matt Fraction’s comedy gets me. I love me a goofy and funny book, and Jimmy Olsen #1 provides it all. Fraction’s writing is full of quick wit, a reason his Hawkeye series is one of my faves. You have to read every bubble and every little subtle font and size change. From a nervously sweating Metamorpho, each section of the book getting its own quirky title, the IT guy in the office, and an entire scene dedicated to east coast accents. It’s all perfectly timed and so so smart. I couldn’t stop chuckling and grinning at all the nonsense. Also need to appreciate the colors of Nathan Fairbairn who gives the book a very classic feel in modern times.
Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #1 isn’t a book to be missed if you like the less serious side of Metropolis. A stark and 180 turn from the recent Lois Lane #1. That crazy kid is going places and I’m going to follow him.
