The Beauty #1 review
What if beauty was a disease? What if catching that disease meant having sex with an attractive person? Would you contract a sexually transmitted disease just to become “beautiful”? The Beauty #1 from Image Comics dives directly into these questions.
The Beauty #1 is an intriguing story from Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley that follows two detectives who are assigned to a special division directly tied to the STD called The Beauty. It’s kind of like Law and Order Special Victims unit, but good. The special unit was created because of the social rift between the people who have The Beauty and those that don’t, and even those that sought out to contract the disease out of vanity.
The moral grounds of The Beauty is what makes it so damn good. I was so intrigued by everything, the unfortunate event that sends the Beauty detectives into a frenzy, can The Beauty kill? Could everyone with The Beauty now die from it? And the cliffhanger at he end of The Beauty #1 is completely unexpected.
I praise Image Comics quite often for taking chances on books that other publishers obviously wouldn’t, some rise and some fall, but much like Saga and The Wicked & The Divine, I am all in on The Beauty. Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley have something special here. It’s dark, mysterious, sexy, and beckons the question, “What’s the cost of beauty?”
