“Hawkman”
“Angel and the Ape”
“U.S.S. Stevens”
I always try to add comedy and randomness to my reviews, and hopefully the many of you who actually read them, enjoy that part of my reviews. To respect the late Joe Kubert, I plan to refrain from too much randomness and focus on remember the influential writer/artist he was.
Joe Kubert Presents: is Kubert’s gift to the fans of the DC universe. It’s a six part series that he, and a few of his close friends put together to celebrate classic comic books. In the first issue you get two stories from Kubert himself, one bringing back Hawkman, a short random story from Brian Buniak, and an intense WWII tale from Sam Glanzman.
I unfortunately didn’t have the luxury of reading many of the classic greats from Kubert, so Joe Kubert Presents: was a great chance for me to experience some of these fresh stories with a retro classic feel. The art is timeless in every story, and the final story involving the U.S.S. Stevens was almost haunting. It’s a fun read that makes you feel like you grabbed one of Kubert’s books right off the newsstand as a kid and was whisked away to another world. I of course didn’t get to live “the good’ol days” so I imagined I was in the 70’s, imagining I was being transformed to another world.
