The revamped Valiant Comics is still pumping out their rebooted/refreshed books from the 1990’s and this month they’ve thrown Shadowman in the mix.
For reasons I don’t understand, this book takes place in the mystical lands of New Orleans, the main problem probably being that I’ve never been there. Voodoo and witchcraft I guess make the city a haven for strange heroes and villains alike. This new Shadowman is the son of the original Shadowman, and he’s merely introduced before revealing himself as “the” Shadowman. The creature or demon he’s going to face off with is Mr. Twist, an internally exposed demon of sorts who’s power is to shoot flesh into peoples mouths. It sounds like terrible hentai tentacle porn, but I assure you it is not.
Between most of the new books Valiant has released, Shadowman sits somewhere between Bloodshot and X-O Manowar, not as good as Harbinger but much better than Manowar. I have absolutely no complaints with the book, issue 1 being merely a build up of both Shadowman and Mr. Twist. You only get a taste of how dangerous each could be, but you don’t get to see any sort of confrontation. The book flows well without too much information and history taking a dump in your brain. I lied to you, I have one issue: Sadly the book feels dated, still stuck in it’s ’90s roots, but hey, maybe that’s your thing.
