The Victories Review (Issue 1)
“Touched”
The Victories is a six part mini series written and penciled by Michael Avon Oeming. You may recognize Avon Oeming’s art style from the book Powers, well, since he draws that one too.
The Victories are a group of super heroes fighting crime in a city much like Gotham, not because some of them look like Batman, although Faustus on the cover coincidentally does, it’s because police and civilians are torn on whether they support vigilante justice or not. Faustus, the focus of the first book, is a mix of Deadpool and Batman, wise cracking and tough but without special gadgets. He faces off against the Jackal, a very cool looking villain, who has cat like reflexes and poison claws. The two battle it out, but not without a curious conversation taking place in between blows.
The Victories is less about “The Victories” and more about the emotional turmoil each hero faces. Faustus alone has a drinking and drug habit, one that leads him into depression anytime someone perishes when he’s attempting to save them. His own confidence sometimes being his downfall. The book isn’t entirely depressing, it has some very funny and quirky one liners, and a leaf over private areas is almost always worth a giggle. The art is sketch like, with thick borders and strong contrasting colors. Has the anti-hero be done too much? We’ll have to see in the upcoming issues, but Michael Avon Oeming has put a bug in Faustus’ ear that could cause an interesting turn of events.
