Top Comic Books of 2019
The year is coming to an end and it is my civic duty as not only a comic reviewer but also as a fan to drop some sort of list. As I’m also lazy I’m not going to spend my time re-reviewing books for the Top Comic Books of 2019 list, instead I’ll highlight some of the favorites I reviewed over the year and maybe add a little award flair to others. The list is kept to books that started in 2019 so those with continuity into the new year unfortunately wont get a mention.
2019 was a long year, so long that I nearly forgot one of the hottest new characters in the DC universe was born mere months into the year. Naomi quietly stormed into 2019 and stole the hearts of readers and bamboozled collectors as they scrambled to pick what would become a very hot first issue.
The most savage of the Avengers. Conan returned earlier in 2019 with his highly acclaimed title, but it was his team-up with Wolverine, Punisher, Elektra, Venom, and Doctor Voodoo that brought the hype. Savage Avengers are the best Avengers.
The underrated 5 part mini-series with a story as wild as its art. The once herald of Galactus must escape the darkness and search his inner self for unimaginable powers to save an unknowing galaxy. Donny Cates creates a “Kirby-esque” world with Tradd Moore.
A BOOM! Studios book makes it into the mix with Once & Future. A stunning story of Grandma and Grandson love. Nothing like your Grandmother teaching you how to hunt monsters and stop King Arthur from fulfilling a dark prophecy.
Jonathon Hickman almost single handedly flipped the X-Men universe on its head and returned it back upright better than it originally was. You can’t talk about the Top Comic Books of 2019 without mentioning what’s been happening with the X-Men. In an effort to save X-Men continuity Hickman prepared the House and Powers of X books to return balance to the mutant title. From these planted roots stemmed the foundation of future X books making House of X and Powers of X one of the most important titles of the year.
So there it is, the Top Comic Books of 2019 in one easy to follow list. But what of those not on the list? How about some Honorable Mentions? You got it! From the staff of Cosmic Comics! itself, I give you Cosmic Comics! Staff Favorites of 2019:
Roland: Mr. And Mrs. X. “Loved the art, story, and characters. Favorite book I’ve read all year.”
Julia: Faithless. DCeased.
Melanie: Once & Future. See above ;)
Burke: Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen. Issue 6 is out now and had a scene where Jimmy has a fat lip, a lisp, and utters the line, “Yeah, you’re more libe th’worlb’s thuckiest dethectib?” to Batman’s face. I rest my case as best underappreciated book of 2019.
