A distressing sight from the future, mythical creatures, and mysteries of the darkest and uncharted depths of the ocean. Scott Snyder’s The Wake explores all of these subjects.
Let’s just keep a lot of the first issue of The Wake a secret, let’s not spoil some very interesting and tasty surprises for everyone else. I didn’t detail the plot summary because, of course, the books strengths is it’s final stunning last two pages. Ha, still didn’t give anything away.
The Wake is a 10 issue series written by Scott Snyder for Vertigo Comics, and it fits the publisher perfectly. The story has so much to tell and Snyder does a great job keeping you on your heels. Man, I can’t stop thinking about how the first issue ended!
Sean Murphy joins Snyder on his quest to create a new mythical race. You should hopefully know Murphy from his politically righteous book, Punk Rock Jesus, one I thoroughly enjoyed from beginning to end. Murphy puts in a little easter egg, even having one of the characters sport a Flack Jackets hat. Murphy’s art has this clean, aggressive, almost sketch-like feel to it, a technique that I immediately recognized. And I love seeing it with color added to it, something PRJ lacked.
Just looking at the creative cast here, this should be a no brainer that this book has quality written all over it. Look forward to some mad shit going down over the following nine issues.
