Wynd #1 Review
Wynd #1 from BOOM! Studios kind of just popped up on racks this week. Previewed as a trade scheduled to arrive later this year, BOOM! thought it was time to give comic readers some much needed solace from everything around the world and surprise us with a very good original new series.
A kingdom ruled by a sick king. Its borders protected for ages against those around it known as the Weirdbloods. But things are not as they seem as a mysterious bounty hunter by the name of The Bandaged Man arrives in the kingdom. Questions are forming. Rumors are spreading. Conspiracies are being spun.
Wynd however, a boy who works in a restaurant with his family in Pipetown lives in his own happy naive world. Although his adopted family loves him and has taken him in as one of their own, it seems the Bandaged Man’s arrival in the kingdom can’t be a coincidence.
James Tynion IV, writer of the already banger Something Is Killing The Children, is joined by the art of Michael Dialynas for Wynd #1. A book that looks like something you’d see on Cartoon Network or exclusively on Netflix. It’s art has a bold animation style to it. Wynd’s innocent looking style masks the much darker drama unfolding in the kingdom underneath.
Wynd #1 didn’t feel complete to me. It felt like there should have been more, and maybe there was supposed to be. After all Wynd was supposed to be released in trade form but instead dropped as an original limited series. The first issue ends abruptly, and leaves you with more questions than a suspenseful cliffhanger.
Wynd #1 is definitely going places, I just wish I knew with who and where.
