Young Avengers #1 Review
“Style > Substance”
Marvel NOW!’s newest Avengers book from Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie and Mike Norton isn’t short on drama. In fact, I’d say it’s on par with many teen drama’s on television right now. One night stands, gay lovers, a young Asgardian god, a Hispanic Miss America (not the pageant), and a Maximoff who unsurprisingly can’t completely control his powers. Sounds like the next big MTV “Real World” to me. Do they even have Real World anymore? Only thing missing is a teen pregnancy…oh god, no ones getting pregnant are they?
With all jokes aside, Gillen has written a very emotionally filled book, one that I feel will only become more stress and drama filled in the coming issues. Issue one even had a little too much personal drama for my taste. Reminded me of Dexter Season 3 where Dexter’s sister was literally crying every episode, it was just too much. There is a fan base for this type of book, hell, CW proves it can make a hit out of any super hero drama, so why can’t a well written Young Avenger drama not work.
A very well written book that’s very easy on the eyes thanks to McKelvie and Norton makes Young Avengers #1 another very strong starting book for the Marvel NOW! series.
