The Crow #1 Review
“Death is My Dojo”
The Crow has returned, although I’m unsure if he ever really left, in the Death & Rebirth series from IDW. The Crow #1 has Jamie Osterberg, an American native, living in Tokyo and currently engaged to his love, Haruko Tatsumi. The unoriginal father disapproval follows. The whole story deals with Bio Trope, a specialist in cybernetic biology, creating a spiritual surrogate type program. Younger people are kidnapped for their bodies so elderly or dying individuals can “control of them”. As you can imagine Haruko is a victim and Jamie swears revenge. The Crow is born soon after.
The Crow #1 was a mediocre read. The story is slow moving and becomes sluggish around confusing moments. The art by Kevin Colden matches the feel of The Crow, being rough and gritty, but still maintains an uninspired look. John Shirley has written a good story, but it’s presentation through the script is lost in translation. The Crow is supposed to be mysterious and powerful, this book just made me sleepy.
Fans of The Crow could maybe salvage some love for this book, feel free to head over to Cosmic Comics! and give it a try.
