Velvet #1 Review

Spy books are difficult to pull off. I only say this because I can’t think of any off the top of my head besides Mark Millar’s Secret Service, which I did thoroughly enjoy. But if anyone has a handle of this tricky genre, it would be none other than the noir master himself, Ed Brubaker.

Let’s not spoil too much for you. Velvet Templeton, a personal assistant to the director of the spy agency, is foolishly framed by a party uninformed of her previous field of expertise. Pulled from her desk, she’s thrown back into the world of espionage, a world she hasn’t been intimate with for over two decades.

So now you know her story, but how is the story? If you know Ed Brubaker, and you enjoy his work as much as I do, you have your suspicions that it’s good. You’re suspicions would serve you correct, because Velvet #1 is a brilliant book, filled with mystery, action, and suspense. Brubaker’s masterful storytelling is complimented by the talented Steve Epting, a team you should all be familiar with.

Velvet is a book that any lover of good storytelling would enjoy, and for those looking beyond the super hero haze of comics, should definitely be intrigued.
