Fanboys vs Zombies #1 Review

There are times when you can throw things in a title and know that it’s going to appeal to the type of audience you are trying to attract.  Fanboys vs Zombies is an example of one of those.  Zombies are huge right now, you add Marvel, Ash, and even Cheerleaders with zombie in the title and you’ve caught my eye.   So seeing Fanboys vs Zombies released this week obviously got it picked off the shelf at Cosmic Comics and given a read.  I’m unsure if other readers will be as torn about the book as I was.  You can tell by reading Fanboys vs Zombies #1 that it’s meant to bring an upbeat comedic take on the zombie genre, which I did enjoy; my problem was with the ever apparent cliches.

Every character is a token caricature of persons we’ve seen a hundred times.  Your narrator Rob, wears an olive drab army jacket with a Star Wars Republic patch and buttons of the like, he’s the “standard” hero type.  Kyle is the Ex-Best friend torn apart by the girl next door, Jenna.  J-Mac is the better looking, muscular Freddy type (of Scooby-doo fame , stick with me here).  There’s my favorite girl of the bunch, Amanda, the pink haired firecracker, but even she screams nerd girl cliche.  And don’t forget that you always need a chubby comedian to keep the conversation light, this position is covered by the not-cliche-name-at-all, Burger.  Might as well be called Chubs, or Chunk, or Porkins.  But let me be fair, Sam Humphries has a well written book here, and the art of Jerry Gaylord compliments the book very well.  I really liked the art actually, I just felt there was no room left for more character development.  But the story is solid and it put’s you right into the action pretty quickly.  The explanation of how the zombie outbreak is quite creative and it’s fun to see a group of “Fanboys” excited about a zombie apocalypse because it let’s them live the endless debate about how they would survive it.

Zombie fans will get a kick out of this book, it’s not serious by any means, and it’s a good change of pace from The Walking Dead or Crossed.  Have a fun time with it and pick up the many different variant covers Cosmic Comics have to offer.  And did I mention this first issue is only a buck?  That’s $1 freaking dollar!  So you really have no excuse.
