We Stand on Guard #1 review

What better way to celebrate the 4th of July than writing a review about our invasion of Canada in the year 2112. I’m of course talking about Brian K. Vaughan and Steve Kroce’s We Stand on Guard from Image Comics.

We Stand on Guard #1 starts off with a bang, or with many many bombs exploding over Canadian territorial soil in retaliation to a terrorist attack on the US. While the issue plays out it appears more like a conspiracy theorists dream as the terrorist attack that spurred the States invasion of Canada was an inside job, an excuse to siphon Canada’s boundless water supply.

The We Stand on Guard story is less about the United States and more about Canada’s freedom fighters, oh, and there’s GIANT ROBOTS!!! Like Robot Jox but without the referee’s the battle of the giant robots is strong with this one. It’s a little lopsided at the moment, since we didn’t actually see any Canadian robots…

The threat from North Korea and Russia are overdone, it’s all about fighting our brothers up north now. Vaghan has crafted a militaristic thriller that swats post apocalyptic zombie books out of the sky like King Kong on the top of the Empire State Building. Maybe that analogy went too far, or made little sense, but I don’t care, I’m on a Canadian freedom fighter high right now from We Stand on Guard #1.
